To document —through photographs—, spaces of play, small gambling halls in Berlin that in some cases seem frozen in the past while simultaneously evoking a future yet to come. This is the spirit of Triple Seven, the new book by Danish German photographer Anne Lass. The artist’s intention has been to freeze these playful spaces in time, small gambling venues now on the verge of extinction due to the advance of new regulations and emerging technologies. These places take us back to sites of communion, to a topology of encounters with the Other that today occurs, to a much greater extent, within the virtual realm.

Undoubtedly, in Triple Seven—alluding to the luck associated with three sevens on slot machines—Anne Lass commits to the predominance of vibrant colors and the retro aesthetics of these spaces. Through her lens, they convey a subtle sense of nostalgia, an evocation of the 1980s and, at the same time, a projection toward the future. Fluorescent colors stand out—greens, reds, and violets—alongside soft textures such as velvet and fabric, and glossy surfaces like leather, plastics, and mirrors. Operating as a link between these places and their histories are the portraits of the employees who still inhabit them, embodying the living memory of a bygone era.
Photographs freeze in time those moments we wish to preserve in memory. In this selection of images, Anne Lass has skillfully chosen contemporary photographs of a nostalgic past that promise to endure in the memory of a playful future still to come.
